Communication Management Professional Certification

Communication Management Professional Certification now available

Are you ready to take on this next challenge in your career?  IABC has launched its Communication Management Professional (CMP) Certification for communicators in generalist/specialist roles. The first exam sitting will be in June 2015 at the World Conference in San Francisco, with future exam dates  to be confirmed over the coming months.

The CMP Certification is geared toward those who are established in their careers and currently manage communications in their organizations. Typically, candidates would have six to ten  years of experience.

This is the first of four certification levels that will be offered. The Strategic Advisor level is expected to become available in 2016 for those who provide advice to senior leadership, followed by the Business Leader certification in 2017 for highly experienced professionals who typically have over 20 years of experience and have an advanced level of mastery and leadership. A foundational level is expected in 2018 for those who have fewer than six years of experience. Candidates are encouraged to apply for the level that suits their experience, and there are no prerequisite levels to complete.

Certification gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and provide evidence of your abilities as a communication professional. Here’s a brief summary of the process:
  • Apply for certification: Apply before April 27 to write the exam in June 2015. Applications will be verified and candidates will be notified if they are approved to proceed with the exam. (If an application isn’t approved, the candidate will be notified and asked to provide required information.)
  • Prepare for the exam: Approved candidates will be invited to a webinar to receive a job task analysis and learn more about sample questions. The IABC Academy will offer material that aligns with the job task analysis. (The exam will be multiple choice.)
  • Write the exam: Candidates have two years from application approval to write and pass the exam. If a candidate is not successful, he/she can retake the exam within the two years.
  • Maintain certification: Certified individuals maintain their certification through annual continuing education (e.g. reading, attending training and professional development events, etc.).

The cost to apply is $500 for IABC members, plus $100 per exam attempt and a $100 maintenance fee.
