Meet the 2018-19 Board


 Regan Halbert – President      

My passion for marketing and communications began at an early age, and I’ve always enjoyed brainstorming and coming up with unique ways to coordinate advertising campaigns, branding initiatives and social media strategies. 

I graduated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Certificate in Economics and a Masters Certificate in International Business. My corporate experience includes serving as Marketing and Communications Administrator of Harvard Developments Inc., and working as a Marketing Consultant for the Government of Saskatchewan.

Embracing the opportunity to continuously learn, and share new experiences is what I am all about! This is my fifth year serving on the IABC/Regina board, and I’m looking forward to networking with chapter members at PD events and through our social media channels. Joanne Kozlowski - Incoming President

My involvement with IABC Regina started when I first moved to the Queen City 20 years ago. As a young communication professional, that volunteer experience introduced me to a wealth of resources and networks to build my career. I am happy to return for my third term on the board and excited for the opportunity to continue to strengthen our IABC Community.

My passion is strategy development, identifying opportunities and finding solutions to organizational challenges. My career path has taken me from the non-profit sector to the university setting and, currently, municipal government.

Outside of work, when I'm not travelling, you can usually find me at one of Regina's many great local restaurants.



Alison Barton –  Outgoing President

What can I say, after six years on the board I'm looking forward to my position as Outgoing President. Providing my advice, information and watching the passion of the current board members continue to grow and advance our profession in the Greater Regina Area. I look forward to all the year has before us.

My passion is working with people and making the human connection and building relationships to tell the story of what's happening. Currently with my position as Manager, Corporate Communications with Economic Development Regina, that means I have the honor of talking about all of the best things of our city and helping to grow our city for the future. Effective communication is about building relationships and I have always been interested in finding more personal ways to connect with audiences.

Outside of work I have a big passion for drinking wine and feeding/cooking for the people I love including my three greatest cheerleaders - my husband Matt and our two boys Coen and Connor.

Kate Abel - Co-Vice-President, Technology

After earning a diploma in Public Relations from MacEwan University and completing an internship for a not-for-profit organization in Edmonton, I was offered a six-month term position in communications for the Government of Saskatchewan. This meant I'd have to move to Regina - temporarily, I thought - and nearly four years later, I'm still here! I've worked in four different ministries and am currently at the Ministry of Trade and Export Development. This is my fourth year on the IABC/Regina board, and I feel very lucky to have the chance to learn from and work with all the talented and skilled Regina communicators who serve on this board and participate in our local IABC chapter.

Outside of work, I spend my time listening to music, eating as much delicious food as possible, participating in long-haul video game marathons and watching terrible B-movies - all of which I prefer along with the company of my friends and a bottle of wine.

Lane Bagnall - Co-Vice President, Communications

This is my second year on the IABC/Regina Executive Board and I’m so excited to once again be part of such a dynamic chapter of local communication professionals.

I’ve always been drawn to power of language and the art of good storytelling. That’s what led me to study journalism at the University of Regina. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree in 2004 (has it really been that long?), I got my first “real” job in communications and haven’t looked back since! In my current position at a health services organization, I have the opportunity to work on so many exciting projects that are dramatically improving how healthcare services are delivered in this province. I can honestly say that it’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my hubby, our little fur baby and my wonderful extended family. I’m an avid music collector and enthusiast, a passionate (yet not-so-stellar) tennis player, and I love to travel as often as I can.

  Shannon McMillan - Co-Vice President, Membership  

This is my first year on the IABC/Regina Board and I’m excited about the opportunity to join the team. 

My passions include chocolate, coming up with ideas, my kids, and the oxford comma. Clearly not in that order, well I guess it depends on the day. 

I am currently the Director of Communications with The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority and have worked in government, in a communications capacity, for 5 years since moving to Saskatchewan from Ontario. My various work experiences, including funeral directing, have fostered my love of learning and have helped hone my skills.

Paula Kohl ABC – Chair, Certification

Paula is happy to be involved with IABC/Regina again, this time as Certification Chair. She previously held board positions from 2005-2008 and was a mentor in the 2014 Mentorship Challenge. Paula achieved her Accredited Business Communicator designation in 2011.

Paula currently holds the position of Director of Communications, Marketing and Strategy with Evraz Place. Prior to this, Paula led an award-winning team of communicators at SaskPower as their Manager of External Communications

A good TV show paired with popcorn and full-bodied Malbec are Paula's true pleasures in life. Her latest venture outside of work is piano lessons. With absolutely no knowledge of music, Paula is proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

  Kelly Brossart - Co-Vice President, Professional Development 

This is my first year on the IABC/Regina Executive Board. Sort of. It’s actually a return to the board since I recall serving as a student advisory member back in the 90’s. I’m excited to rejoin the organization in a leadership capacity and hope my years of experience in communications and public relations will serve the organization well. I’ve worked in the private sector, for a non-profit, and currently for the GTH, a government entity. Outside of office hours, my two sons are what I consider my true job. I’m passionate about spending time with family and friends and living life to the fullest. Through the professional development portfolio, I look forward to helping members hone their skills, keep up with new trends, network, and maybe have a little fun.   Matt Geiger - Co-Vice President, Communications

As a new recruit to the IABC Regina board, it is such an honor to join this thriving community of communications professionals and help share our collective story.

With over a decade in the marketing industry under my belt, I’ve focused my time on the art of visual communication and becoming a ‘one-man ad agency’ who is truly passionate for the areas of branding, design, and being able to craft any story in a creative package. In my current role as Marketing and Communications Administrator for Harvard Developments Inc., I am blessed to play a lead role in building the brand, communication, and marketing strategies behind some of Western Canada’s premier real estate projects. Prior to this, I was part of the Regina Pats Hockey Club where I was in charge of the team’s marketing, sponsorship and community efforts, and I am also entering my fifth year serving on the Board of Directors of the Regina Red Sox.

When I’m not at the office or the ballpark, my time is usually spent at the lake, building something in the garage, or hiking a trail with my trusty canine comrade, @rookie_thelabrador.

  Sheena August - Co-Vice President, Membership

I have moved to the membership portfolio having served two partial years with the professional development portfolio.

I studied at the University of Regina and have a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in English and Linguistics and a Certificate in Public Relations. I have worked in communications and stakeholder relations in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Coincidentally, the focus has been on infrastructure—pipeline, railway, housing, and schools, so I am quite at home in my current role as the communications manager for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan.

  Shalyn Rousseau - Co-Vice President, Chapter Management

I am honoured to be on the board for the Regina Chapter of IABC as the VP for Chapter Management. I am very new in the communications field and I am excited to take part in IABC.

I graduated from the University of Regina with my B.A. with a double major in Political Science and Religious Studies back in 2015. I am an alumni of the Saskatchewan Legislative Internship Program and I am currently taking courses for my Certificate in Public relations through the University of Regina’s Centre for Continuing Education. I will complete my certificate in the Winter 2019 semester. I have worked for the Ministry of Social Services for two years and began my current position as Research and Information Management Analyst in December 2017. I knew I wanted to work in the human services Ministries for a while as providing the best services for the most vulnerable sectors of our society is very important to me.

A friend of the family once told me “never walk past a door to opportunity” and I have taken those words to heart ever since. My interest in communications began in the summer of 2014 when I was a summer student for the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District. I worked under their communications officer and was very intrigued by her passion and the work she did. I met another friend, Kaitlyn Abel, who works in the communications field a couple years later and she definitely helped seal my decision in taking this career path.
